A day late, but I’m here now! This weeks flash is a little short, but I hope you still enjoy it. Without further ado…
His eyes trailed her the entire night. He couldn’t help it. If anyone noticed, and with all likelihood, they did, they’d know by the gleam in his eyes what she meant to him. Keeping his feelings hidden any longer just wasn’t possible. His feet itched to cross the ballroom floor and pull her into his arms. No more than fifty feet separated them. Yet, he felt like they were worlds apart. Especially with the way she left tonight. No one to blame but himself.
“Yo, Abe, if you stare any harder, laser beams are gonna come out of your eyes.”
Turning to his best friend and partner, Drake, he tried to muster up a grin. He failed miserably. “She still wants to keep us a secret. I can’t take it anymore.”
“I know you don’t want to hear this, but it’s probably for the best.”
His anger was swift, but his control even better. Before his fist connected with Drake’s jaw, he took a step back. “Not you, too.”
“Look, man, think—”
“I’m out of here.”
A strong hand grabbed his shoulder, whipping him around before he took another step. Drake’s gaze was stern with a hint of sympathy mixed in. “Stay. I need you here.” He dropped his hand. “I want you here.”
“You already got your award for saving the day last month, which you deserved. You’re gonna be a sergeant before you know it, then a lieutenant, and I could go on and on and on. I’m proud of you.” Abe got into his face. “But it doesn’t mean I’m going to listen when you say shit like that.”
“You’re in deep.”
He backed up as he wiped a hand down his face. “It’s like I’m swimming in the deep end, treading water, and treading and treading and treading, and there’s no help in sight. I love her, and yet, I don’t truly have her. That’s all I want.”
Drake leaned in, obviously not worried he was going to sock him in the face, yet still tempted to do it. “Do you ever really think you’re going to get that? I don’t say that to be a dick. I’m just being honest. I don’t want to see you get hurt, and I’m afraid you’re going to.”
Abe sought her out, his eyes zoning in on her immediately. Gorgeous. True beauty, inside and out. There would never be another woman for him but her. Even if she eventually left him. There would be no woman after her.
“She’s amazing. She’s my everything.”
“She’s also the daughter of the most ruthless mobster in this city.” Drake sighed. “If he ever finds out his little girl is dating a detective with the NYPD, what do you think his reaction will be?”
“It shouldn’t matter.”
“It matters, dude.”
She turned slightly, making eye contact with him. She held his gaze briefly, then glanced away. He didn’t miss the hurt and sadness in her eyes. He put that there. How was he supposed to take it away and get what he wanted at the same time?
“I love her. That’s all that matters.”
