Sugar Cookies

It’s time for more yumminess in your tummy! Sugar cookies!!! If you’ve read Merry Me, then you know that Lynn made sugar cookies several times. I’m going to share the recipe she used. It’s super easy, although rolling out the dough can get tricky because the dough will be a little sticky at first. Adding flour will help contain that. If you haven’t read Merry Me, then you’re in luck. It’s only $.99 right now.

Let’s bake! Oh, and the pretty picture above are the sugar cookies my girls and I made today. They did such a lovely job of decorating them.♥

Sugar Cookies

2 1/4 cups sifted flour

1/4 tsp salt (Although, I normally just sprinkle a little in. And today, I actually didn’t add any and the cookies still taste amazing.)

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup shortening

1 cup sugar

2 eggs, beaten

1/2 tsp vanilla

1 tbls milk

To color the cookies:

1 egg

1/4 tsp water

Paint brushes

Food coloring

Sprinkles (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Sift flour, salt, and baking powder together. Set aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla, then add sifted ingredients and milk. Stir well. (You might have to mix by hand at the very end.) Sprinkle some flour on your counter and on your rolling pin, then roll out the dough and cut with desired cookie cutters. It’s up to you how thick you want your cookies. Mine aren’t that thick.

Place cut outs on a cookie sheet. To make the coloring to paint the cookies, mix one egg and 1/4 tsp of water and split into 4 separate bowls. (You might need to double the recipe if you want more than four colors.) Add desired food coloring to each bowl. Stir.

My girls wanted to color coordinate with the paint brushes. I did double the egg mixture and we also made the color orange.

Paint your cookies. Add sprinkles if you wish.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. This is what my original recipe calls for, but today when I baked the cookies I only baked them for 6 minutes and they were perfect. Our oven is old, but cooks things very fast. So I suggest checking your cookies around 6 minutes and add more time if necessary. They should look golden brown. (Or like the picture above.)

And there you have it! Sugar cookies! Enjoy.
